Most asked

Will a straight band sit flush against my engagement ring?

Narrow it down in three questions.

There’s no single best wedding band, only the best one for your ring, your hands, and your taste. Your answers suggest a starting point and what to ask about at your appointment.

How will you wear it?

How much sparkle?

How do your hands spend the day?

A channel-set diamond band

Where we’d start

A channel-set or bar-set diamond band

The diamonds sit inside walls of metal, protected from knocks, with a smooth surface that won’t catch on gloves, knits, or hair.

Worth knowing

You trade a little sparkle for peace of mind. Seeing both styles together makes the difference easy to judge.

Bring your engagement ring. If its center stone sits low or has a halo, a straight band may leave a gap, so we’ll try straight and contoured bands against it.

A starting point, not a rule. Your advisor will show you alternatives side by side.

Pairing with your engagement ring

How will your two rings sit together?

It’s the question we hear most, and the hardest one to judge on a screen. Most pairings fall into one of three approaches.

A straight band

Works when the engagement ring’s setting sits high enough for a band to slide beneath it. The simplest, most versatile choice.

Look for: classic, shared-prong, and channel-set bands

A contoured band

Curves around a low, wide, or halo setting so the two rings sit flush, with no gap between them.

Look for: curved and fitted bands, or a band shaped to your ring

A band on each side

A ring jacket, or a second band, frames the engagement ring from both sides for a fuller, balanced stack.

Look for: ring jackets, slim spacer bands, and anniversary bands

Bring your engagement ring in and we’ll try all three against it. If no ready-made band sits quite right, we can shape one to match.

Metal, profile, and width.

Three details decide how a band looks on day one and how it wears for decades. Here’s what each choice means, in plain terms.

Wedding band metals compared

Metal Color How it wears Worth knowing
Platinum Naturally white, so it never needs plating. Dense and durable. Develops a soft satin patina that can be polished back to a high shine. Heavier on the hand, and a secure choice for holding diamonds.
18K gold Yellow, white, or rose, with the richest color. 75% pure gold. Softer than 14K, so it shows fine scratches a little sooner. White gold is rhodium plated for brightness and re-plated every so often. We do it on site.
14K gold Yellow, white, or rose, a shade softer in color than 18K. 58.5% gold. Harder and more scratch-resistant than 18K, and usually lower in price. A practical choice for hands-on work and active lives.
Tantalum A dark, gunmetal gray. Highly resistant to corrosion, and made for an active life. Often paired with gold edges in two-tone men’s designs. Ask about sizing before you order.

Band profiles

The shape of the band in cross-section changes how it looks from the side and how it feels on your finger. Shown with the finger side down.

Half-round

Domed on top and flat inside. The traditional wedding band shape.

Flat

Straight sides and a flat top for a crisp, modern line.

Comfort fit

Rounded inside, so it slides over the knuckle more easily. Many people prefer it for wider bands.

Beveled

Angled edges frame the top, often around a brushed or satin center.

Width

Our classic women’s bands run from slim 1 mm spacers to about 4 mm; men’s bands are typically 4 to 8 mm. Wider bands make more of a statement; narrower ones read understated and stack easily.

Natural or lab-grown diamonds

Both are real diamonds that look the same to the eye. The differences are origin and price, and we’ll explain the tradeoffs honestly. If you’d like to see lab-grown options, tell us when you book.

Lee HausmanWashington Diamond client · Engagement and wedding rings
Should my band match my engagement ring’s metal?

It doesn’t have to. Matching metals look seamless and wear at a similar rate. Mixing metals is a deliberate look many people love; if you mix, we’ll explain how a harder metal can wear against a softer one over time.

Do our two bands need to match?

Not at all. Many couples choose bands that share one detail, such as the metal, the finish, or an edge, rather than identical rings. If you’d like a true matching pair, we can design one.

Can an anniversary band be resized?

It depends on how far the diamonds go. A full-circle anniversary band generally can’t be, because diamonds circle the whole band. A three-quarter anniversary band has a plain section underneath that can usually be adjusted. That’s why we size these bands with extra care.

When should we start shopping for wedding bands?

Give yourselves time for sizing and any engraving or custom work. When you book, tell us your wedding date and your advisor will suggest a timeline.

Can we engrave our bands?

Yes. A date, initials, or a few words inside the band is a detail that lasts a lifetime. Ask about engraving at your appointment, or browse 130 wedding band engraving ideas for inspiration.

Is resizing included?

Washington Diamond customers receive complimentary resizing within six months of purchase. Our master jewelers do the work on site.
